Durham was born on 7 October 1884, the son of Frederick Lambton, 4th Earl of Durham and his wife Beatrix Bulteel.

Durham was educated at Eton College.
Lord Durham is best remembered for the donation of Penshaw Monument to the National Trust. He fought in the First World War as a Captain in the 3rd/7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and was wounded. He succeeded to the earldom and subsidiary titles on the death of his father on 31 January 1929.
Durham died on 4 February 1970, aged 85.
