Career
He played collegiately for the Louisiana State University. Upon graduation, John suited up for the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League. He played in 141 games for the Nats from 1946 to 1949.
He played for the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Sheboygan Redskins (1949-1950) in the National Basketball Association for 16 games.
Following his basketball playing career, Chaney became possibly the first-ever assistant men"s basketball coach at Louisiana State University. He played a significant role in the Tigers" 1953 first-ever National Collegiate Athletic Association Final Four appearance and Securities and Exchange Commission Championship and 1954 Securities and Exchange Commission Company-Championship.
