Not illustrated. 1839 Excerpt: ...Bavaria to the ban of the empire; but being ill served by prince Lewis of Baden, the general of the empire, the French partly recovered their affairs, notwithstanding their repeated defeats Though the duke of Marlborough obtained very splendid victories, he had not all the success he expected or deserved. Joseph was suspected of a design to subvert the liberties of Germany; and he expected that England should take a principal part in a war, which was carried on chiefly for his benefit. To a considerable portion of ambition and pride, he added ardour, enterprise, and indefatigability. In the space of five years he saw Lombardy subdued, Piedmont evacuated, Naples reduced, and the Netherlands conquered, by his own arms anc! those of his allies. He certainly governed the empire with more despotism than any of his predecessors, and the house of Bavaria was a monument of the inflexibility of his temper. He fell a martyr to the smallpox and the unskilfuiness of his physicians, in the priui4 of life. Though the electoral college were not generally disposed in favour of his brother the archduke Charles, the elector of Mentz gained him all the votes, by the following decisive argument: "The empire," said he, "is a wife of high birth without a fortune. She requires a great expenditure for her maintenance; and the house of Austria alone possesses revenues adequate to that purpose." The archduke was, therefore, elevated to the imperial throne by the name of Charles VI. As a ten-year man he was a Cambridge graduate. His Doctor of Divinity is presumed a Lambeth degree by Venn. Robinson was master of Ravenstonedale grammar school, Westmorland, from 1795 to 1818, perpetual curate of Ravenstonedale from 25 June 1813 to 1833, and rector from 31 July 1818 of Clifton, and from 12 August 1833 of Cliburn.
