Career
After having lived in Mexico for the past two decades, Ward enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Duncan, Texas in August 1870, and joined other Black Seminoles known as the "Seminole Negro Indian Scouts". Ward was discharged from the army in October 1894, and worked as a farmer for the rest of his life. He died at age 62 or 63 and was buried at the Seminole Indian Scout Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas.
