Thompson started his career at Manchester United, spending four years at the club but failed to break into the first team Thompson was released in the summer of 2015 and subsequently joined Rangers on trial. After impressing manager Mark Warburton, Thompson signed a two-year contract.
He made his professional debut for Rangers against Alloa Athletic on 7 November 2015.
On 23 February 2016, Thompson joined the then Scottish League One side Airdrieonians on a 28-day emergency loan. Thompson has represented Northern Ireland at various age levels.
