Joseph Albert Lintner was born on February 8, 1822 in Schoharie, New York, United States, the son of Reverend George Ames Lintner and his wife, Maria Wagner.
Lintner graduated from Schoharie Academy in 1837. The regents of the University of the State of New York awarded him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
In 1837 Lintner entered business in New York City, continuing his studies in the Mercantile Library and contributing occasional scientific articles to the New York Tribune. In 1848 he returned to Schoharie, where he remained in business until 1860, when he moved to Utica and was there for some years as a manufacturer of woolens.
During this business career he continued his scientific studies. He began collecting insects in 1853, and published his first article in 1862. In 1868 he abandoned his business to become assistant in zoology in the State Museum. He was placed in charge of the entomological department in 1874 and in 1880 was appointed state entomologist.
For the last thirty-six years of his life he was occupied almost solely in work with insects. He wrote extensively for the agricultural press, especially for the Country Gentleman, and for twenty-five years was the entomological editor of this journal. His articles were always of a practical character. His annual reports were prepared with extreme care and were models of their kind. His style was simple, dignified, and concise, and his treatment of his topics was extremely thorough. He was president of the Association of Economic Entomologists in 1892. He died in Rome, Italy.
