(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Historical Memoir on Italian Tragedy, From t...)
Excerpt from Historical Memoir on Italian Tragedy, From the Earliest Period to the Present Time Early enamoured of the literature of Italy, it was, during many years, my solace amidst the corrosive cares of life. An opportunity of visiting the classic shores of that enchanting clime occurring, I availed myself of it, and returned a more enthusiastic admirer, if possible, of the effusions of the Italian muse. Soon after my arrival in my native country, ill-health obliged me to retire from "the busy hum of men," and I sunk into rural seclusion in a verdant valley, watered by a winding river, at the foot of a range of lofty mountains. Here I summoned around me the swans of the Po and the Arno, and, while I listened to their mellifluous strains, time passed me with an inaudible step. But though I no longer sighed after the society which I had abandoned, I felt an ardent desire to increase its stock of harmless pleasures. With this view the present work was undertaken. Discovering in Italian tragedy, a rich mine of intellectual wealth, hitherto almost totally unexplored by my countrymen, I determined, however ill-qualified I might be, to endeavour to direct their notice to this literary treasure. If they should not find me an intelligent guide, they will, I trust, have no reason to accuse me of intentionally leading them astray. In taste and judgment I may often fail; but in truth of representation! flatter myself I shall be generally found scrupulously correct. Walker was born in Dublin and educated under Thomas Balliol
An invalid with acute asthma, in his earlier years he travelled a great deal for his health, and for many years lived in Italy. Walker"s main work is Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards (1786), an important source for, among others, the life of the Irish harper Turlough Carolan. Lesa Ní Mhunghaile is of the view that the translations of Irish poems in this publication were influenced by Ossian, but also were considered by the author to improve on the originals.
Walker"s Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish (1788) was also concerned with the recovery of the Irish past
Walker was aware of the tension between national revival and the bardic note of loss. Besides his more important writings (see below) he also wrote Anecdotes on Chess in Ireland, a paper contributed to Charles Vallancey"s Collectanea de Rebus Hibernicis.
He also left works in manuscript, including a journal of his travels and materials for Lives of the Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers of Ireland. Francis Hardy, biographer of the Earl of Charlemont, undertook a biography of Walker, finished in 1812, but then suppressed by the family.
On Hardy"s death the materials were handed to Edward Berwick, who does not seem to have completed the work.
Many of Walker"s letters are printed in John Nichols"s Literary Illustrations. After his time in Italy, Walker settled down in a house called Saint Valerie, Bray, County Wicklow, with art treasures and an extensive library. Here he passed the rest of his life.
He died on 12 April 1810 in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, and was buried on 14 April in Street Mary"s Churchyard, Dublin.
