He earned his Doctor of Philosophy at Northwestern University in 1944. His thesis was "Some Points in the Theory of Positive Definite J-Fractions" (related to continued fractions) co-authored with High School Wall. He was the eleventh African American to earn a Doctor of Philosophy.
