Morehead was born in 1777 near Stirling in central Scotland the son of William Morehead FRSE (1737-1793) and Isabella Lockhart.

Morehead was born in 1777 near Stirling in central Scotland the son of William Morehead FRSE (1737-1793) and Isabella Lockhart.
He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1802.
He held incumbencies in Leith and Edinburgh before his time as Dean. And at Easington, Yorkshire afterwards. In the 1830s he is listed as living at 26 Hill Street in the centre of Edinburgh"s First New Town.
The building was demolished to create a small car park.
In 1832 he left Edinburgh and went to Yorkshire where he served as Rector of Easington until death. He died on 13 December 1842.
Their children included Charles Morehead FRSE (1807-1882) an authority on tropical diseases.
