During his professional career, other than modest clubs in his early years, he played for South Carolina (U.S.) Braga (where he was consecutively barred by two Portuguese internationals, Quim and Paulo Santos, after the former"s departure to SL Benfica), Chaplain to the Forces Os Belenenses, Gil Vicente Football Club, U.D. Oliveirense, F.C. Arouca and Communicative Disorders Trofense, the first two in the Primeira Liga and the last four in the second division. Marco made his debut in the main category of Portuguese football on 17 February 2002, appearing for Braga in a 0–1 away loss against Communicative Disorders Santa Clara.
