McMurdo was educated at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Gregory Terrace (1967–1971) and then at the University of Queensland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1975.

Her appointment on 30 July 1998 saw her become the first female president of an appellate court in Australia. She was admitted as a barrister in 1976. She was the first woman to be appointed to the bench of the District Court of Queensland (1991).
She was a judge of the Children"s Court of Queensland from 1993-1998.
She was appointed President of the Queensland Court of Appeal in 1998.
