He was drafted 42nd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1995 National Hockey League Entry Draft but has never played a game in the National Hockey League. Instead, he had spells in the American Hockey League for the Rochester Americans, the ECHL for the South Carolina Stingrays and the United Hockey League for the British Columbia Icemen. "Magical" Mark Dutiaume as he is known in Sheffield returned to the Steelers in the 2002-2003 season and became a fan favourite with the Steelers fans during his time in Sheffield. In the inaugural Elite Ice Hockey League season in 2003-2004, Dutiaume led the league in assists and points, leading the Steelers to the league championship.
During the Steelers" disappointing 2004-2005 campaign Dutiaume left Sheffield for Italy and joined Bolzano.
However after a poor season in Italy, Dutiaume rejoined the Steelers for 2005-2006 and once again led the team in goals, assists and points. On May 19, 2006, Dutiaume joined then-Elite League Champions the Belfast Giants.
After two seasons in Belfast, Dutiaume retired from hockey.
