(Julia Glass returns with a tender, riveting book of two s...)
Julia Glass returns with a tender, riveting book of two sisters and their complicated relationship. Louisa Jardine is the older one, the conscientious student, precise and careful: the one who yearns for a good marriage, an artistic career, a family. Clem, the archetypal youngest, is the rebel: committed to her work saving animals, but not to the men who fall for her. In this vivid, heartrending story of what we can and cannot do for those we love, the sisters grow closer as they move further apart. All told with sensual detail and deft characterization, I See You Everywhere is a candid story of life and death, companionship and sorrow, and the nature of sisterhood itself.

(Seventy-year-old Percy Darling is settling happily into r...)
Seventy-year-old Percy Darling is settling happily into retirement: reading novels, watching old movies, and swimming naked in his pond. But his routines are disrupted when he is persuaded to let a locally beloved preschool take over his barn. As Percy sees his rural refuge overrun by children, parents, and teachers, he must reexamine the solitary life he has made in the three decades since the sudden death of his wife. With equal parts affection and humor, Julia Glass spins a captivating tale about a man who can no longer remain aloof from his community, his two grown daughters, or - to his great shock - the precarious joy of falling in love.

editor journalist novelist writer
Julia Glass was born on March 23, 1956, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
Julia was educated at Concord Academy. She graduated from Yale University in 1978. Besides, she studied painting in Paris, France.
Julia Glass worked at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum in her native Massachusetts. In 1980, she moved to New York City, where she worked as a copy editor and continued her painting. Glass had always loved to write, and she found herself spending more and more time creating short stories.
She began seriously devoting herself to fiction writing only in her late 30s, following a series of devastating events in her private life: her first marriage ended, she discovered she had breast cancer and, soon after that, her younger sister (whose profile resembles Clem's in many respects) committed suicide. Reeling from these misfortunes, Glass sought solace in writing. Remembering a bereaved widower she had met in college during a trip to Greece, she began a short story that grew into the manuscript of Three Junes. Published in 2002, that novel integrated the linked stories of a Scottish family named McLeod over several decades, beginning in 1989, after the matriarch's death.
Her second novel, The Whole World Over (2006) tells a vivid tale of longing and loss, revealing the subtle mechanisms behind our most important connections to others. In The Whole World Over, she pays tribute once again to the extraordinary complexities of love. Greenie Duquette lavishes most of her passionate energy on her Greenwich Village bakery and her young son. Her husband, Alan, seems to have fallen into a midlife depression, while Walter, her closest professional ally, is nursing a broken heart. At Walter's restaurant, the visiting governor of New Mexico tastes Greenie's coconut cake and decides to woo her away to be his chef. For reasons both ambitious and desperate, she accepts heading west without her husband. This impulsive decision, along with events beyond Greenie's control, will change the course of several lives around her.
Her third novel, I See You Everywhere, was published in 2008. Julia Glass engages this volatile dynamic head-on, presenting a double portrait of mismatched sisters, Louisa and Clem Jardine, whose lives are intertwined, "like a double helix, two souls coiling around a common axis, joined yet never touching." Throughout her life, Louisa - the brainy, cautious, urban older sister - simmers with jealousy over her younger sister's superior vitality, her supercharged love life, and her adventurous career in the wilderness, where she works among creatures still wilder than she.
Her fourth novel, The Widower's Tale, was published in 2010. It is the story of Percy Darling, a 70-year-old man who has lived for decades in the same house in the same Massachusetts town. He has been a widower for 32 years since his wife drowned in the pond behind their home. Percy raised their daughters Clover and Trudy alone, never loving another woman.
And the Dark Sacred Night was published in April 2014. It is the story of a 42-year-old man whose wife sends him in search of his biological father. He was raised by a single mother who became pregnant with him at age 17; she was a good mother in many ways, but she has resolutely refused to tell him the identity of the man who impregnated her.
In addition to teaching fiction writing at Emerson College, Glass teaches an annual workshop at the Fine Arts Work Center and is a co-founder of the nonprofit arts program Twenty Summers.
