George James Cole was born 3 February 1906 in Malaya, the son of James Francis Cole, and was educated at the Raffles Institute in Singapore.

He was raised to the peerage on 24 March 1965. Cole held a number of Industrial positions including, Joint Managing Director of The United African Company, Limited, 1952-1955, a Director of Taylor Woodrow (w Africa) Limited. 1947-1955, Chairman of Palm Lincolnshire Limited.
1952-1955, Director of The Niger Company
Limited 1951-1970, Director of Finance Corporation for Industry 1957-1973, Director of Commonwealth Development Fincance Company Limited. 1966-1970, Chairman of Unilever Limited.
1960-1970. He was also Chairman of the Governing body of the London Graduate School of Business Studies 1965-1970, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Appointment of Advertising Agents 1965-1971 and Chairman of Rolls Royce (1971) Limited.
1971-1972. He was a Commander of the Order of Orange Nassau of the Netherlands. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Cole, of Blackfriars, in the county of London 24 March 1965.
He died on the 26 of December, 1979 at the age of 73.
