(Excerpt from American Nervousness: Its Causes and Consequ...)
Excerpt from American Nervousness: Its Causes and Consequences, a Supplement to Nervous Exhaustion (Neurasthenia) This work is designed as a supplement to my lately published work on Neurasthenia (Nervous Exhaustion). That work, though it appeared but one year ago, speedily passed to a second edition in this country, and has already been translated into German. It is just to infer that at last, after long delay, an audience has been found for a scientific discussion of this class of subjects. In the preface to Nervous Exhaustion it was stated that the chapter on the causes was designedly omitted, inasmuch as a thorough elucidation of that side of the subject, in all its relations and dependencies, would be of so complex a character as to require a special volume of itself. (While very little has been added during the past ffew yea...)
While very little has been added during the past ffew years to our knowledge of the etiology, pathology, tor treatment of neurasthenia, yet it will, I think, be I admitted by all whose experience entitles their opinion to weight that the disease is in most instances entirely curable and in some cases self-curable. The enuncia Ition and widespread diffusion of this idea I consider fmost important, for in neurasthenia we are dealing with a condition of mind and body that occasions more misery and paralysis of utility than many an organic ,and incurable disease; and because, added to those wearisome and subjective symptoms of distress which only the neurasthenic himself appreciates, and the phyf sician who listens to his tale of woe, is a condition of I utter hopelessness and a resistive tendency that sometimes very materially interferes with the success of therapeutic measures. The true neurasthenic has a double burden to bear, in that, being sick and in pair, friends, relations, and associates in their I ignorance take little care to conceal their opinion that I all these symptoms are mere figments of the imagi Ination. The method employed was substantially modeled after the localized electrization of Duchenne; but the resolts though in some instances very decided were, on the whole, unsatisfactory. But the soothing and invigorating effects of a persevering use of a steady current of induced electricity were so manifest in his own person, and in other cases where it was employed, that lie was encouraged to continue his investigations at various intervals both in hospital and in private practice. (Trinity f Viedica! College, PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION....)
Trinity f Viedica! College, PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION. IN issuing a third edition of this work I have endeavored to make such additions as seemed necessary, and at the same time avoid an increase in size. This has been accomplished by condensing wherever possible, and omitting portions here and there which have served their purpose and are no longer of value. Two new chapters on the Sequelae of A cute Diseases and on Exophthalmic Goitre, respectively, have been inserted, while several pages in the discussion of Electro-diagnosis have been omitted, and the space occupied by later and more exact information. The chapter on Diseases of Women ha been revised, and the clinical additions will be found interesting and suggestive, while in the discussion of Midwifery the complication of Extra-U terine Pregnancy is fully considered. These, together with many other changes and brief additions throughout the work, have, it is believed, materially enhanced its practical value. The position of electricity in the front rank of sedatives and tonics, and the pre-eminent value of the methods of general faradization and central galvanization, as means of obtaining the full measure of these effects (claims in regard to which the authors of this work once stood alone), have now been so long confirmed by expert observation in this country and Germany that extensive demonstration of these propositions by cases is less needed than formerly. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Nervous Exhaustion (Neurasthenia): Its Symptoms, Nature, Sequences, Treatment Neurasthenia is now almost a household word, and, equally with the term malaria, affords to the profession a convenient refuge when perplexed at the recital of a multitude of symptoms seemingly without logical connection or adequate cause. The diagnosis of neurasthenia. moreover, is often as satisfactory to the patient as it is easy to the physician, and by no means helps to reduce the number who have been duly certified to as neurasthenic, and who ever after, with an air too conscious to be concealed, allude to themselves as the victims of nervous exhaustion. The doctrine to be taught and strongly enforced is that many of these patients are not neurasthenic, and under hardly any conceivable circumstance could they become neurasthenic. They do not belong to the type out of which neurasthenia is born, either mentally or physically. Many of them are unintellectual, phlegmatic, and intolerably indolent, and are pleased at a diagnosis which touches the nerves rather than the stomach, bowels, and liver. Instead, therefore, of rest, quiet, and soothing draughts, they need mental and physical activity, less rather than more food, depletion rather than repletion. The object of this work is to present, in a compact, practical form, all that is now known on the application of electricity to the treatment of disease. The aim of the authors has been to combine their own extensive and varied researches with localized and general electrization, and the labors of all other recent explorers in electro-therapeutics, in a summary which should be at once practical and exhaustive, and which should represent with strict impartiality all that has been really accomplished in this department by every school, in every countr) ,and by all methods. For this undertaking the authors have been prepared by an experience acquired in more than 10,000 applications of electricity in a wide variety of morbid conditions, and by personal observation of the methods and the results of the recognized leaders in this important field of science. For convenience of reference, and in order to avoid repetition and confusion, the work is divided into Elictro-P hysic SyE lectro-P hysiologyy Electro Thcrapeutic Sjand Electro-S urgery, It is believed that by this arrangement the work will be more acceptable both to the majority who seek to consult the distinctively practical portions, and to the few who may desire also to investigate the subject of electricity in its physical and physiological relations. General electrization, which the authors were the first in the profession to systematically investigate, is here, for the first time, described and illustrated in systematic detail of its modus operandi and its very remarkable effects in conditions of debility. To central galvanization, especially galvanization of the sympathetic for which the laborious school of Remak have laid the profession under great obligations has been accorded an attention and a prominence to which, by its growing imx rtance, it is certainly entitled. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Beard was born in Montville, Connecticut on May 8, 1839, to Review Spencer F. Beard, a Congregational minister, and Lucy A. Leonard. Beard"s mother died in 1842 and his father remarried the following year to Mary Ann Fellowes.
He graduated from Yale College in 1862, and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York in 1866.
While still in medical school during the American Civil War, he served as an assistant surgeon in the West Gulf squadron of the United States Navy aboard the gunboat New London. He is remembered best for having defined neurasthenia as a medical condition with symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, headache, impotence, neuralgia and depression, as a result of exhaustion of the central nervous system"s energy reserves, which Beard attributed to civilization. Physicians who agreed with Beard associated neurasthenia with the stresses of urbanization and the increasingly competitive business environment.
Typically this followed a short illness from which the patient was thought to have recovered.
One of the more unusual disorders he studied from 1878 onwards was the exaggerated startle reflex among French-Canadian lumbermen from the Moosehead Lake region of Maine, that came to be known as the Jumping Frenchmen of Maine. If they were startled by a short verbal command, they would carry out the instruction without hesitation, irrespective of the consequences.
The studies stimulated further research by the military and Georges Gilles de la Tourette. Beard was also involved extensively with electricity as a medical treatment, and published extensively on the subject.
He also took an unpopular stance against the death penalty for persons with mental illness, going so far as to campaign for leniency for Charles J. Guiteau, the assassin of President James Garfield on the basis that the man was not guilty because of insanity.
He died on January 23, 1883 in New York City.
