He was the son of Review John Savile, rector of Thornhill, Yorkshire and educated at Christ Church, Oxford (1696) and the Middle Temple (1691).

He and had two sisters. Ann and Gertrude. He was appointed High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1706-1707. He was elected knight of the shire (Member of Parliament) for Yorkshire for 1728 to 1734.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in November, 1721.
George married Mary, the daughter of John Pratt of Dublin (but reputedly the natural daughter of Henry Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne) and had three children. Arabella, George (8th Baronet), and Barbara.
