Sondes was the son of George John Milles, 4th Baron Sondes.

The latter year he succeeded his father as fifth Baron Sondes and entered the House of Lords. In 1880 he was created Viscount Throwley, of the County of Kent, and Earl Sondes, of Lees Court in the County of Kent. Lord Sondes married Charlotte, daughter of Sir Henry Stracey, 5th Baronet, in 1859.
They had several children.
Lady Sondes died in June 1927.
