Born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi, Richardson graduated from its Coleman High School and played college football at nearby Jackson State College.

Richardson was selected in the seventh round of the 1965 American Federation of Labor-Congress draft by the Kansas City Chiefs and played for them from 1967 through 1970, including the world championship season in 1969 which ended with a victory in Super Bowl IV. Dealt to the Oakland Raiders at the start of training camp, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns in September 1972, and played three seasons. He is the younger brother of former NFL wide receiver Willie Richardson, who played for the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins.
