He studied chemistry at the Charles University in Prague, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1881.

In the same year, he became professor at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zurich, where he worked with Victor Meyer. After working at the University of Amsterdam with Jacobus Henricus van "t Hoff in 1894 and 1895, Heinrich Goldschmidt became full professor at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule . He left the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in 1901 for the University of Oslo. He worked there until his retirement in 1929 at the age of 72.
Heinrich Jacob Goldschmidt died in Oslo in 1937.
