He taught at the university for many years and retired in the 1980s. Gleason began studying at Hartford Seminary in 1938 and received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1946. His text "Introduction to Descriptive Linguistics" (with an accompanying workbook) was positively reviewed in Language.
The review described the book as a suitable update to Leonard Bloomfield"s well-known textbook Language.
Gleason was a member of the American Bible Society, and a pastor in Fancy Gap, Virginia.
