Barton was from Oakleigh Park in north London. He first served in the Royal Navy but transferred to the Royal Air Force and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer. In 1942, he was posted to Malta where he was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cross. Back in England, he died on 4 April 1943 while making an emergency landing.
Barton is buried at Street Andrew"s church, Totteridge.
