In 1949, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Capricornia. He held the seat until 1961, when he was defeated by George Gray of the Labor Party. Along with Bill Grayden, Pearce is the earliest surviving Member of Parliament, and one of only two living "Forty-Niner" Liberal MPs.
