He moved to New York City and worked as a grocer.
In 1818, at the age of forty-five, he purchased a building on the corner of Cherry Street and Catherine Street in Manhattan and founded Brooks Brothers. Personal life
They had five sons, Henry Brooks (1805-1850), Daniel H. Brooks (1810-1884), John Brooks (1813-1899), Elisha Brooks (1815-1876), and Edward Sands Brooks (1821-1875).
He died on December 21, 1833. He was buried in the Sands Point Cemetery in Sands Point, New New York
