He was the eldest son of Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet, and Lady Octavia Grosvenor, daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford.

He succeeded his father to the baronetcy in 1903. He was awarded the Central Bank in 1916 and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1933, and was Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire from 1922 until his death.
