Her parents were Esther and Iorworth Evans. Her father was a furnaceman and she attended the University of Wales where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts and went into teaching. She wrote children"s book in English and Welsh - winning prizes at Eisteddfods.
She took the Crown for prose at the National Eisteddfod in Powys.
There is an annual memorial prize, given each year to aspiring children"s novelists by the Welsh Arts Council, called the Irma Chilton bursary. Previous winners have included Jennifer Sullivan.
