MILLARD SHEETS began his artistic career in southern California, and rose in a zenith of promise to international recognition as one of the foremost watercolorists of his era. He is equally well known for his oils, acrylics, tapestries, mosaics, and murals, many of which can be found in the resplendent examples of his architectural design: over forty Home Savings and Loan facilities, seventeen air schools, the Scottish Rite Masonic temples in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and countless others. Innovative mixtures of form and function, these designs established the benchmark for others to follow. Superb color reproductions of many of Sheets' best works provide the capstone to a captivating story of one man's effort to beautify the world. It's not unusual to hear former students say of him, "Millard Sheets changed my life." Indeed, the man and his work have touched and enriched the lives of many artists and non-artists alike. Artist, teacher, creative entrepreneur-Sheets has had a tremendous impact on the way people perceive their environment. His life has been a profound odyssey, an adventure sustained by optimism, courage, and an enduring love of the world around him. In this eloquent and moving profile, the authors record the bold outline of his life; they demonstrate the graceful and creative flow as well as the strong and elegant spirit of a man who has become a fountainhead of modern art and design.
