In this volume, Paul Auster has selected prose poems and lyrics from five volumes of Dupin’s poetry published over a quarter-century. Sharing affinities and landscapes with Reverdy, Char, and Ponge, Dupin has developed, nevertheless, a poetry so distinctive and innovative to the American ear and eye that it could, especially with this selection, tincture the reading and writing of poetry in the United States. Eschewing theory, he creates speculations that enact the self’s effacement, while sustaining the human in brilliant imagery and shadowy narrative.

Translated from the French by John Taylor. In the field of contemporary French poetry, Jacques Dupin (b. 1927) is a leading figure in a remarkable generation that also includes Yves Bonnefoy (b. 1923), Philippe Jaccottet (b. 1925), Pierre-Albert Jourdan (1924-1981), André du Bouchet (1924-2001), and Pierre Chappuis (b. 1930) - to mention only these five poets whose poetics and subject matter are remotely comparable. However, in contrast to Bonnefoy and Jaccottet especially, Dupin's work has been little available in English.

Jacque Dupin was born on March 4, 1927, in Privas, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Ardeche, France. His father was a psychiatrist at a state mental hospital.
In 1945 Jacques Dupin attended College de Privas, University of Paris.
Jacques Dupin began his literary career in 1950 with the poetry volume Cendrier du voyage, and in the ensuing decades, he has produced more than twenty additional verse works. In these various publications, Dupin has established himself as a radical poet devoted to exposing the tenuous relationship between words and their representative objects.
Among Dupin’s notable volumes of poetry is VEmbrasure, a 1969 publication in which the poet characteristically undermines the validity of the very language with which he expresses himself. In addition to producing poetry, Dupin has published several volumes on art. One of his most imposing works on the subject is Miro, an early 1960’s monograph about the Spanish master of abstract painting and sculpture. Dupin has also produced works on Alberto Giacometti and Henri Michaux.
In 1966, he co-founded the poetry quarterly L’Éphémère, with poets including André du Bouchet, Yves Bonnefoy and Paul Celan. He was the director of publication at Galerie Maeght, which represented Joan Miró, a close friend. The gallery also represented Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Francis Bacon, and Wassily Kandinsky. Giacometti and Bacon both painted his portrait. In 1987, Dupin was the curator of a retrospective of Miró's work at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the first such retrospective in New York since 1959.
