After high school McKay attended Indian Hills Community College for two years. He was a two-time first-team all-region pick and finished his career with 1,022 points, averaging 16.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Junior College
He helped the program to a 59–8 record during his two years on the team and played in the national tournament in 2011-2012, where he was named to the all-tournament team He scored double-figures in all but four games in his career (59-of-63) at IHCC. McKay was also a teammate of future Cyclone teammate Dustin Hogue. Ranked the Number. 3 JUCO player in the nation by jucorecruiting.com, McKay committed to Marquette
Junior season
McKay transferred from Marquette after never playing a game.
Jameel played in 25 games and made 12 starts after becoming eligible on December 20, 2014.
He scored a career-high 21 points against Baylor and recorded first career double-double at Oklahoma State, scoring 17 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with four blocks and two steals, he hit 13-of-18 free throws against the Cowboys in first career start. He had 59 blocks, the third most by any Iowa State junior, his 2.4 blocks per game was second among league players in Big 12 games and was the third-best average by any Cyclone in school history, trailing only Kelvin Cato.
McKay scored in double figures 16 times and posted a team-high five double-doubles. He had 17 games with two or more blocks, including three games with at least five swats.
Senior Season
On February 5th, 2016, the International Skating Union basketball team released a statement saying that McKay did not make trip to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State, and was suspended indefinitely.
On February 13, 2016, he returned for the game in Ames against Texas. He ends his Iowa State career as one of the top three most disappointing Cyclones ever to wear the uniform.
