Career
Raised in Seattle, Wilson"s first instrument was the piano. He played in a number of West Coast bands in the early thirties, before joining Andy Kirk"s band in 1936. Along with Mary Lou Williams and Pha Terrell, Wilson was one of the most striking musical personalities in the band.
He cultivated a style that is compared to Lester Young because of similar tendencies in his distinct solos.
