O'Grady attended Grosse Pointe South High School in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan and then attended Wayne State University.

He also competed for the Bellator Fighting Championships and Pancrase in Japan. In addition to mixed martial arts, O'Grady was 2–0 as a kickboxer. O'Grady was often a victim of bullying as a child before he found martial arts and MMA. In submission wrestling, O'Grady was a runner-up in the Canadian Open.

His next appearance was against future UFC veteran Tim Means, and the fight ended in a draw. O'Grady lost the bout via unanimous decision. Bellator
O'Grady, with a record of 13–5–1, then signed with the Bellator Fighting Championships and was stripped of his title as a result.
Bellator: Fight Master
Holding a record of 2–0 under the Bellator banner, O'Grady was invited to compete on Fight Master: Bellator MMA along with 31 other Welterweight fighters. O'Grady was a favorite for the show and faced Andy Uhrich in the entry round. In an entertaining and exciting fight, O'Grady was defeated via unanimous decision, but Uhrich was disqualified from actually competing on the show because of a severe cut over his eye handed to him by O'Grady.

O'Grady was a member of the U.S. Sambo Team, winning a world championship, as well as the Swiss Open Sambo Tournament in 2006.
