In 1983, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zagreb with a Bachelor in Croatian language and literature.
In 1987 he started his journalistic career with Radio Sljeme. Television career In 1990 Merlić left radio and moved to Television Zagreb, now Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). From 1990 to 1991 he was an editor and anchor of HRT2 news.

Beside that he also worked as the anchor and the editor of the talk show "Pressing". From 1990 to 1991 he worked on Channel 2 News.
From 1992 to 1996 he worked on “Slikom na sliku”.
From 1998 to 1999 he worked on “Jedan plus jedan”. From 2000 to 2001 he worked as the head of the news program "HTV".
From 2001 to 2003 he worked as the director of corporate communications for Pliva. In June 2003, he established Castor Multimedia.
In October 2004, he launched the show The Pyramid.
In October 2005, he launched the show Counter Angle. In September 2007, he launched the show Stanje nacije. In 2009 Castor Multimedia producted local version of German television show Schillerstrase ”MOJA 3 ZIDA” (RTL Croatia).
In 2009 Merlić became a member of the Croatian jury Supertalent, which is the Croatian version of the licensed show Got Talent. Dubravko Merlić worked as a member of a launching team of the regional cable 24 hours news channel Non-attached (Cable News Network"s Southeast Regional Partner) where he also performed as a News Director for Non-attached Croatia.
