His nickname was "The Twirl". He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 3rd round of the 1979 National Basketball Association Draft (58th overall pick) after playing collegiately for Robert Morris University and the University of Detroit. During his twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association, the 6"9" forward-center played for the Philadelphia 76ers (1980–1983), Detroit Pistons (1983–1986), Chicago Bulls (1986-1987), Los Angeles Clippers (1986-1988), Charlotte Hornets (1988-1989, 1990-1991), Houston Rockets (1993-1994) and Toronto Raptors (1996-1997).
Cureton played with two National Basketball Association championship teams.
He played 674 National Basketball Association regular games and 54 playoff games, averaging 5.4 Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and 4.7 RPG in 18.4 minutes per game.
