Edith Thacher was born on September 14, 1910, in Kansas City, Missouri, United States to John Hamilton Thacher and Edith Gilman Thacher. She had one older brother, John Jr., and one younger brother, Nicholas.
Hurd attended Radcliffe College and the Bank Street College of Education.
With her husband, Clement Hurd, as illustrator, Hurd wrote books for elementary-age children such as Nino and His Fish, Mr. Charlie’s Pet Shop, Christmas Eve, and Mr. Charlie’s Chicken House. She also teamed with former college friend Margaret Wise Brown on four books. Using the pseudonym Juniper Sage, they wrote The Man in the Manhole and the Fix-it Men, Two Little Miners, and others. On her own she wrote books such as The Wreck of the Wild Wave and I Dance in My Red Pajamas. Hurd also taught at the Dalton School for four years and was a news analyst for the Office of War Information during World War II.
