Before entering politics, he was a lawyer in Maryborough. In 1914, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Grampians, narrowly defeating sitting Liberal Hans Irvine. He died of a brain haemorrhage a few months later, on New Year"s Day 1915.
