He was born in Chorley and died during World War I in Barly, Somme, where he had been serving with the British Army. He appeared in 37 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman and wicketkeeper. He scored 1,638 runs with a highest score of 95 and held 26 catches with three stumpings.
