He was born into a Salvation Army family in Stockholm, Sweden on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1894.

He took up the East-flat flugelhorn at age 6, and attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, graduating with honors in 1914. He emigrated to the United States in 1915, and continued his association with Salvation Army music there. He was also known for his association with Edwin Franko Goldman, many of whose works Leidzén transcribed or arranged.
He died on December 20, 1962, in New York City, shortly after suffering a stroke.
