Devine is best known for a new model of class with seven classes ranging from the Elite at the top to a Precariat at the bottom. She collaborated with the British Broadcasting Corporation website British Broadcasting Corporation Laboratory United Kingdom on the Great British Class Survey. More generally Devine specialises social stratification and mobility.

And in gender, work and family. She is co-director of the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change at Manchester. She was awarded an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for Services to Social Sciences in 2010 and elected to the Academy of Social Sciences in 2011.
