(Based on a three-day symposium, "The Claims of Memory," t...)
Based on a three-day symposium, "The Claims of Memory," this volume conveys the omnipresence of memory in Elie Wiesel's writing and attempts to preserve the flavor of the exchange that took place. It represents several intersecting approaches to memory: the nature of memoir writing; an analysis of contrasting dimensions of memory in victims and persecutors; the ethics of memory; and chronicling of the "memory" of God through key texts in Christian and Jewish traditions. Contents include: Cynthia Ozick, "The Rights of History and the Rights of Imagination" Susan Suleiman, "Do Facts Matter in Holocaust Memoirs? Wilkomirski/Wiesel" Shlomo Breznitz, "The Advantages of Delay: A Psychological Perspective on Memoirs of Trauma" John Silber, "Memory, History, and Ethics" Geoffrey Hartman, "The Morality of Fiction and Elie Wiesel" Jeffrey Mehlman, "Reflections on the Papon Trial" Paula Fredriksen, "Augustine on God and Memory"

( Charging that may widely held opinions found in the bod...)
Charging that may widely held opinions found in the body of modern Jewish philosophy are inadequate if not false, Katz attempts a reconstruction of these beliefs into a more compelling and tightly composed account of Jewish thought. The book addresses a number of particularly significant topics relating Jewry, with essyas on Martin Buber, Eliezer Berkovits, Richard Rubenstein, Emil Fackenheim, and Ignaz Maybaum. A significant review of Jewish philosophical foundations by one of today's most dynamic and important scholars of Judaism.

( Rabbi Jacob Agus' (1911-1986) intellectual production s...)
Rabbi Jacob Agus' (1911-1986) intellectual production spanned nearly a half century and covered an enormous historical and conceptual range, from the biblical to the modern era. Best known as an important Jewish scholar, he also held important rabbinic, teaching, and public positions. Although born and raised within an orthodox setting, Agus was strongly influenced by American liberalism and his work displayed modernizing sympathies, reservations about nationalism--including some forms of Zionism--and often severe criticisms of kabbalah. Agus crafted a unique, quite American, modernizing vision that ardently sought to remain in touch with the wellsprings of the rabbinic tradition while remaining open to the intellectual and moral currents of his own time. The Essential Agus brings together a sampling of Agus' most important published and unpublished material in one easily accessible volume. It will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers seeking to experience Agus' intellectual legacy.

"Of the 12 well-crafted essays in this volume...the most useful are those dealing with the Holocaust." Choice "Especially recommended for college-level students of Jewish history and culture." —The Bookwatch This is a critical exploration of the most repercussive topics in modern Jewish history and thought. A sequel to Katz's National Jewish Book Award-winning study, Post-Holocaust Dialogues, this book identifies the main issues in the contemporary Jewish intellectual universe and outlines a larger, more synthetic understanding of contemporary Jewish existence.
