Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Wilson received an Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee in 1939 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1941. He was in private practice in Knoxville, Tennessee from 1941 to 1942. He was in the United States Army Air Force Sergeant from 1942 to 1946.
He was in private practice in Knoxville, Tennessee from 1946 to 1961.
Wilson was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Wilson was nominated by President John F. Kennedy on May 24, 1961, to a seat vacated by Leslie R. Darr.
He was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 14, 1961, and received his commission on June 15, 1961. He served as chief judge from 1969-1982.
Wilson served in that capacity until his death.
