He began his career as a Missionary to the Māori in Southern Taranaki. He was then at Rotorua from 1905 to 1917. He Assistant Superintendent of the Māori Mission in Hawkes Bay until 1928 when he became the Suffragan Bishop of Aotearoa in the Diocese of Waiapu.
