Gakuryo Nakamura was born on the 10th of March, 1890 in Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan.
Gakuryo Nakamura received a commission to decorate the Homei-den state banquet hall of the Tokyo Imperial Palace. He designed the tapestry works for the decorations of the wall called Toyohata-gumo (A Pretty Bank of Clouds). He was also commissioned to decorate the Ume-no-Ma audience room, a hall that has an area of 152 square meters or 46 tsubos. His, Kouhaku-bai, drawing is at the center of the wall. In 1925, he made a sight-seeing tour of China and Korea. He worked at Inten as its staff member and retired from it in 1950. From 1935, he served many times as judge at government-sponsored art exhibitions. In 1940, he was commissioned to lead a team of artists to copy moral paintings of Horyuji Temple and engaged in the reproduction of wall paintings of that temple. He also was the head of Soya-sha Private Art School.
