Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Makowsky graduated high school from Walter Murray Collegiate.

During his 4 years at the, Makowsky helped the U of South Huskies to two Hardy Cup Championships, as well as being named to the Canada West All Star team in 1994. He was selected 23rd overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 1995 Canadian Football League Draft. Makowsky played 17 seasons in the Canadian Football League—all with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
He was a 5 time Canadian Football League All Star and a West Division All Star for seven consecutive years (2004 through 2010).
On August 5, 2011, Makowsky made history, playing in his 272nd game, surpassing Roger Aldag for most games played by a Saskatchewan Roughrider. In 2015, he will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
Makowsky, along with his then teammate Matt Dominguez, made a cameo appearance in the Corner Gas episode "Reader Pride".
He represents the Saskatchewan Party in the constituency of Regina Dewdney.
Makowsky was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in the 2011 provincial election.
