Career
He is currently playing with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.
He then joined the Plymouth Whalers, who had picked him in the first round (19th overall) in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, where he played major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2008 to 2012. His outstanding play was recognized when he was named to the 2011-2012 OHL Third All-Star Team. On April 23, 2012, the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (National Hockey League) signed Schmitz as an undrafted free agent to a three-year, entry-level contract.
His began his professional career in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades, but also played 21 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL during the 2012-2013 season.
Following the completion of his entry-level contract with the Hurricanes, Schmitz was not re-signed by the Hurricanes and failed to earn another National Hockey League contract. On October 6, 2015, Schmitz continued his professional career in signing a contract with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.
