Ludwig Wittgenstein is universally recognized as one of the most original and influential philosophers of his age and as a personality of great magnetism and power. Not all who recognize his importance admire him or approve of it; his life and work are both surrounded by controversy. In this welcome reissue of his classic biographical study, complete with a brand-new Preface, Brian McGuinness traces the early years of this fascinating figure and examines the formative influences which shaped his extraordinary life.

This book has two aims. First it seeks to identify the principal lines of interpretation of Wittgenstein's philosophy (Logical Atomism, Neopositivism, the work of Ayer, the analytic philosophy of the post war period and the new tendencies of the last decade). These interpretations, often surprisingly different, are described in the first part of the book. It presents an historiographical panorama while also serving as a necessary guide for anyone who comes to the study of Wittgenstein for the first time. It provides the criteria by which the reader may orient himself supported by the 2000 titles examined in chronological order in the second part. The bibliography is not a simple listing of author and title. In many cases brief critical notes are appended to author and title details, especially where the item is of considerable influence. Lists of reviews from a wide range of periodicals are attached to all books mentioned. The aims of "Wittgenstein - A Bibliographic Guide" is to give a picture of the philosophical debates that have surrounded Wittgenstein's work. The result demonstrates how profound his influence has been on 20th century thought and culture and allows a clearer grasp of the more fugitive and controversial aspects of his thought.
