In the Wings revolves around the Phoenix, a fictional alternative theater in downtown Toronto in the early 1990s that very much resembles Toronto’s Theatre Passe Muraille, an artistic institution with which Corbeil has been intimately associated for many years. Although financial problems have brought the Phoenix to the verge of extinction, its artistic director.

1992Corbeil's writing was often informed by the cultural displacement, and the subsequent sense of dual belonging, that she experienced when her parents divorced.
Corbeil was such a skilled writer that her opinion was never driven by insecurity or meanness. She seemed to shudder with delight at anything beautiful. And she was so awestruck by the appalling powers invested in arts reviewers that she couldn't help but take on those issues in her second novel, In The Wings.
Carole was married to Layne Coleman, an actor. They had one daughter, Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman.
