Carolyn Merrick was described by Frances Willard of the Women"s Christian Temperance Union as a "lady who can make the WCTU a success, even in the volatile city of Mardi Gras." After a ten-year term as president of her local WCTU chapter, Merrick became president of the National WCTU in 1882.
