Career
He was a central figure in the distinguished Jones military family with relatives holding commissions in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, World War I, and World World War World War II Jones was appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on January 29, 1809 and was promoted to first lieutenant later that year. He resigned in July 1812 to accept a commission as a captain of artillery in the United States Army. He received brevets to major and lieutenant colonel for his services in the War of 1812.
He was promoted to colonel and adjutant general in August 1818, and in March 1825 became Adjutant General of the United States. Army.
He received brevets to colonel in 1824, to brigadier general in 1832, and to major general in 1848. He died in 1852 and is buried in the Congressional Cemetery.
