(Excerpt from The Cabinet of Irish Literature, Vol. 1: Sel...)
Excerpt from The Cabinet of Irish Literature, Vol. 1: Selections From the Works of the Chief Poet, Orators, and Prose Writers of Ireland, With Biographical Sketches and Literary Notices A Roman historian in a well-known passage rebuked an ancient people for ignorance of their own land and their own race. Strong as is the attachment of the Irish people to their country, they cannot be wholly acquitted of the same charge. It is only within the last half century that a real attempt has been made to subject early Irish literature to severe and systematic investigation; and German scholars at one period seemed likely to anticipate Irishmen in the study of the Celtic tongue. The rise of men like O'Donovan, O'Curry, Petrie, and others, fortunately averted this national discredit, and an impetus has now been given to Celtic research which, so to speak, secures the future of that department of Irish literature. But it is not the ancient literature or the elder generations of Irish litterateurs that alone have been neglected by the Irish people. There are few Irishmen, I venture to think, who have any conception of the number of well-known literary names which belong to Ireland. Accustomed to read and hear of many writers as belonging to English literature, we are liable to forget their connection with Ireland; and thus many eminent authors pass for being English who were born on Irish soil. Apart, however, from this consideration, the want has long been felt for a work in which the prose, the poetry, and the oratory of great Irishmen might be found in a collected and accessible form. Such a book is primarily necessary for the purpose of enabling the literary history of Ireland to be traced in a systematic manner; and not the literary history only, but also the historical and social development of the people. In Ireland, as in other countries, literature is the mirror wherein the movements of each epoch are reflected, and the study of literature is the study of the country and the people. Most Irishmen, moreover, have felt the desire for a work in which they could readily find access to the gems of literary effort which rest in their memory, and would be gladly seen again. I have made ample confession of the neglect of Irish literature among Irishmen themselves, and with the greater freedom I can make complaint of the astonishing ignorance of Irish literature among Englishmen. It is not exaggeration to say that many London writers of comparatively small importance are better known than some Irish writers of genius. So much for the ideas which led to this Work; I now pass on to the plan on which it has been prepared. As will be seen, a biographical sketch is first given of each author, and this is followed by selections from his works. The memoirs are not, as a rule, of great length, for the book is meant to be a cabinet of literature and not a biographical dictionary. (Miss Lawless was born in I reland. She is the daughter of...)
Miss Lawless was born in I reland. She is the daughter of the third Lord Cloncurry, and sister of the present peer. Her books are: Hurrish; Major Lawrence, F.L.S.; The Story of I reland; With Essex in I reland; Plain Frances Mowbray; Grania ;T raits and Confidences; and Maelcho. From the lastnamed exquisite book we give a long excerpt. However Time may shuttle our modern appreciations there can be no doubt that Miss Lawless must rank among the first of I rish novelists. Miss Edgeworth, Carleton, John Banim, Miss Lawless, Miss Barlow; in some such way the bede-roll must begin. In Miss Lawless swork strength and sweetness are happily united. Terror and pity meet in her pages; and the story of Maelcho and the Desmond Rebellion wrings the heart as intolerably as those few poignant words of Spenser in which he, an alien and an enemy, describes the sufferings of the hungerstricken in the Desmond countiy. The extracts are given by kind permission of the author. MAELCHO TELLS FAIRY STORIES. (from MAELCHO .) Then peace fell upon the camp that peculiar, almost unnatural peace which was apt to follow those melodramatic entrances and exits. Three or four hours passed. The Spaniards had left otf fort-building and settled down to their suppers. Upon his ledge of rock Hugh Gaynard was squatting comfortably upon his heels beside the Vol. IV. fire, in a fashion he had learnt among theO Flaherties. It was a damp evening, with a heavy biiny smell, for the air was beginning to curdle up with minute particles of sea fog. The small stream gurgled sociablv through its limestone shingle, growing all but noiseless as it sank amongst the roots of the spurries and stunted scurvy-worts which covered the lower slopes. A di eamy impression of melancholy seemed to be brooding over the whole wide gray wilderness of water, stretching away sail-less, solitary, desolate, seemingly to the very (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

(Born 1760 Died 1834. S ir Jonah Barrington was the fourth...)
Born 1760 Died 1834. S ir Jonah Barrington was the fourth child of John Barrington of Knapton, neai A bbeyleix, Queen s County. He was born in 1760, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1788 he was called to the bar, and two years later was returned as member for Tuam. He opposed Grattan and Curran, and was rewarded by the Government in 1793 by a sinecure office in the Custom House, worth 1000 a year. At the same time he was made a Kings Counsel. In 1798 he lost his seat, but next year was returned for Banagher. He voted against the Union, and thereby lost his sinecure and any immediate hopes of advancement. Yet with strange inconsistency he acted as Government piocurer for bribing at least one member to vote in favour of the Union. In 1803 he stood for the city of Dublin in the Imperial Parliament, but was defeated, although he had the support of Grattan, Curran, Ponsonby, and Plunket. His services apparently were regarded as of some value to the Government, for he was made judge in the A dniiialty Court, and knighted. In 1809 he published, in five parts, the first volume of the Historic Memoirs of I reland. It is supposed that he was induced to delay the second volume, the Government shrinking fiom the exposure of their conduct in carrying the Union, and that to purchase his silence he was allowed to reside in France from about 1815, and act as judge by deputy. This foreign residence had been rendered necessary by his extravagant manner of living at home, and he had often to resort to dishonourable expedients Vol. il in his business dealings. In 1827 he published two volumes of Personal Sketches of his Own Times. In 1830, by an address from both Houses of Parliament, he was lemoved from the Bench, in consequence of misappropriation of public money. In 1833 appeared the third volume of Personal Sketches, and in the same year the delayed volume of his (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Died 1869. W illiam Carleton was born at Prillisk, county...)
Died 1869. W illiam Carleton was born at Prillisk, county Tyrone, in 1794. He was the youngest of fourteen children. His parents were in very humble circumstances, for they had to support themselves and their large family on a farm of but fourteen acres. He himself has drawn the portraits of his father and mother. My father ,he says, possessed a memory not merely great or surprising, but absolutely astonishing. He could repeat nearly the whole of the Old and New Testament by heart, and was, besides, a living index to almost every chapter and verse you might wish to find in it. ... As a teller of old tales, legends, and historical anecdotes he was unrivalled, and his stock of them was inexhaustible. He spoke the I rish and English languages with nearly equal fluency. With all kinds of charms, old ranns or poems, old prophecies, religious superstitions, tales of pilgrims, miracles, and pilgrimages, anecdotes of blessed priests and friars, revelations from ghosts and fairies, was he thoroughly acquainted. And so strongly were all these impressed upon my mind, by frequent repetition on his part, and the indescribable delight they gave me on mine, that I have hardly ever since heard, during a tolerably enlarged intercourse with I rish society, both educated and uneducated with the antiquary, the scholar, or the humble mechanic any single tradition, usage, or legend that, as far as I am at present recollect, was perfectly new to me or unheard before in some similar or cognate dress. This vast fund of information which the one parent placed at the disposal of Carle2 VOL. III. ton would, however, have been of little use if he had not had the imagination to fashion it into form; that imaginative power he received from his mother. My mother ,wrote Carleton, ... possessed the sweetest and most exquisite of human voices. In her early life, I have often been told by thos (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
