(Ourite tenet of mine, and there are now, I thnik, others ...)
Ourite tenet of mine, and there are now, I thnik, others who hold it, that I nsanitj is no exception to the rule which requires a knowledge of the nornud as an indispensable (ffeliminary to a knowledge of the abnormal The reason why the contrary opinion has been maintained with such vigour, and the contrary practice so generally followed, has seemed to me to be the absence of any work in which normal psychological processes are dealt with from the point of view and for the purposes of the alienist Of the many excellent works on Psychology which are at the service of the student, there is none that affords him material help in understanding the nature of those disorders of mind which it is the work of his life to study. For instance, the chief labours of the student of the disordered mind are concerned with the existence and nature of Delusion; but, as far as I know, no work on normal psychology gives him any help in settling the preliminary questions of what a delusion is; of how it differs from a normal state of mind; of its mode of origin; or of its varieties. It is true that these are not questions in normal psychology, and it is no reproach to the psychologist who deate with the normal alone that they are excluded from his purview; but it is a great disadvantage to the alienist to be left without guidance in the face of problems of such profound importance to him. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Conduct and Its Disorders: Biologically Cons...)
Excerpt from Conduct and Its Disorders: Biologically Considered It would appear, prima facie, that few studies are more important than that of Conduct; for man is engaged in conduct during the whole of his waking life, and even the times, places, and occasions of sleep are parts of conduct. Conduct is what we are all engaged in, from birth to death; and yet, though many departments of conduct are described in many books, there is not in existence, curiously enough, any comprehensive study of conduct as a whole - any general view of the field of human activity. (Excerpt from Lunatic Asylums: Their Organisation and Mana...)
Excerpt from Lunatic Asylums: Their Organisation and Management There are few departments of man's labour - more completely specialised and more different from the rest than that. Which deals with the management of Lunatic Asylums. It is therefore somewhat remarkable that no system of instructions on this matter has hitherto been published, and that it has been left for the writer of this volume to be the first to treat the Subject systematically. That the practice of different individuals in this, or in any other department of labour should be reduced to uniformity is eminently undesirable, and to advocate uniformity of practice is no part of the object of this book'; but it is eminently desirable that there should be agreement as to main principles; that the objects to be striven for should be clearly recognised; that various ways of attaining them Should be discussed; that those already found successful Should be stated; that improved methods should be suggested; and that the isolated and disconnected teachings of experience Should be brought together, combined, systematised, and made readily available to those in search of information. (Excerpt from The Nervous System and the Mind: A Treatise ...)
Excerpt from The Nervous System and the Mind: A Treatise on the Dynamics of the Human Organism Not very many years ago, courses of lectures on Physiology used to be prefaced by an apology from the lecturer for occupying the time of the students with a subject which did not directly concern the treatment of patients, and by a laboured exposition of the various uses of a knowledge of physiology. Such an apology would not now be either needed or tolerated. The least intelligent of men needs now no explanation to convince him of the necessity of a knowledge of the normal as preliminary to a knowledge of the abnormal. The rawest of students requires no proof to show him that he cannot understand disorder of a function until he has some knowledge of its healthy working. Physi ology is no longer considered a useless subject arbitrarily added to the medical curriculum by tyrannical examiners for the mere purpose of increasing the burden to be borne by students. So far we congratulate ourselves on a distinct advance of Opinion. But the advance is not yet quite far enough. One branch of medical science has remained in this respect absolutely stationary. There is one department of medicine, and only one, in which a knowledge of the normal is not only not considered as a necessary preliminary to a knowledge of the abnormal, but is openly scoffed at, jeered at and derided. Mercier was born on 21 June 1851.
He studied medicine at the University of London where he graduated.
He worked at Buckinghamshire County Asylum in Stone, near Aylesbury. He became the Assistant Medical Officer at Leavesden Hospital and at the City of London Asylum in Dartford, Kent. He also worked as a surgeon at the Jenny Lind Hospital.
He was the resident physician at Flower House, a private asylum in Catford.
In 1902 became a lecturer in insanity at the Westminster Hospital Medical School. He was also a physician for mental diseases at Charing Cross Hospital.
In 1894 Mercier was secretary of a committee of the Medico-Psychological Association. He published articles in the Journal of Mental Science.
He joined the Medico-Legal Society in 1905, and became the president of the Medico-Psychological Association in 1908.
Mercier has been described as a pioneer in the field of forensic psychiatry. He was the author of many important works on crime, insanity, and psychology. Mercier who spent most of his career studying insanity and mental disorders did not believe human personality could survive death.
In the book he criticized Lodge for ignoring Occam"s razor and invoking miracles.
He claimed that after investigating the subject he had personally experienced communications with the dead, levitation and telepathy. The book was heavily criticized in a review.
lieutenant was published by Watts & Company, a publishing company that has historical links with the Rationalist Association. The book was positively reviewed by the British Journal of Psychiatry which described it as a well written parody of spiritualist phenomena.
David Robert Grimes has noted that "Mercier had spent a great deal of time debunking trance mediums, painstakingly dismantling their claims".
