After studying at Lincoln"s Inn he was admitted to the bar in England. She died in Wellington on 18 July 1900 aged 71 years. In 1860 they emigrated to Auckland, and that year moved to Wellington.
He was on the boards of local schools and local companies e.g. the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company and the Meat Export Company.
He retired from the law in 1887 due to failing eyesight. He contested the 1881 election in the Foxton electorate, where he was second of six candidates, beaten by James Wilson.
He represented the Wellington South and Suburbs electorate from 1887 to 1890, when he was defeated (for the Hutt electorate).
